Anything You Can Do, Better - Senior Variety Show Preview

Senior Variety ShowSt. John's seniors will give you a night to remember at the upcoming Senior Variety Show.

by Kelly O'Brien
The Princess and Queen competitions are certainly highlights of Carnival season, but don't make the mistake of thinking they're the only glitzy shows around! Coming  June 19th is the 7th Annual Senior Variety Show, and take it from us, you don't want to miss it!
Miss Jane Johannes has organized the event every year since its inception. "I said, 'Since we're having this cultural time, it's really good to put the seniors on stage--since they're always left out--to show their talent,'" she says. And their talents are considerable.
Miss Jane says the evening comprises performances of all sorts - singing, dancing, acting, everything - and that's only a part of the show. There are fashion competitions (for evening wear, sportswear, and yes, even swimwear) as well as cultural performances like dancing the maypole. This year's show will also feature a professional calypso singer, says Miss Jane.
Just because this is the Senior Variety Show, though, doesn't mean all the participants are over 65. Miss Jane says you don't have to be a senior to perform - last year's participants went from their 40s on up.
So, if you've never been out for the Senior Variety Show, make sure to catch it this year - it's a night of honest entertainment, island charm, and more than a little sass. And if we can't convince you, just let Miss Jane, "Come out and support the seniors. Because ‘senior' is just a number, and they can do whatever the young ones can do - and more. It's lots of fun."
