Christmas for the Animals 2008
On the 75th anniversary of the repeal of the Prohibition - by chance, no less! - the terraces of Tango Mare were filled with flappers and fedoras. More than 100 people turned out to celebrate the annual Christmas for the Animals fundraiser, which this year had a Roaring Twenties theme. For those who didn't have a closet full of Prohibition-era couture, "cigar girls" circulated, selling boas, hats, and other period accessories. But an impressive number of people did rustle up some fabulous ‘20s threads. Take Moneywell Joseph, who sported an outrageous black and yellow zoot suit or Kate Norfleet and her incredible cigar girl attire. Their amazing outfits tied them for the Best Costume award. Other prizes were awarded for raffle drawings, including restaurant certificates and several weekend stays in the BVIs.
To the sound of ‘20s swing, partygoers mingled on the patio overlooking Hart Bay and feasted on the fine comestibles donated by several local caterers. There were also two speakeasies - the Bullets and Bubbles Lounge, and the Bootleg Bar - the latter sporting an actual bathtub, for the gin, of course. The event raised well over $10,000 that will go to support the efforts of the Animal Care Center.
